Let's face it. We have so
many people with kind heart, people with generosity in this vast world. But the
truth is people with genuine humanitarian soul is hard to find and very few
people will willingly spend their time, money and energy to be a volunteer.
Nevertheless, I am always eager to do volunteer works and already did many such
deed because I have someone in mind. Someone that never failed to be an idol
for me. Someone that I look up to. Indeed, he has the heart of a humanitarian
and never missed any volunteering and charity program. He always remind me that
a portion of my belongings is other's. So, I try to get involved with such
volunteering works as frequent as I could ; be it in neighborhood or even to
the international level. I do it all. Another thing is I always choose to work
with food mainly because cooking is my passion and shopping is my expertise. I
enjoy both very much. So the food or logistics bureau are perfect for my
capabilities.
My first challenge came when they insist to combine the two bureaus under
me which in the other mean, I was in charge for two distinct bureaus. I was
strongly against that because from my past experiences, I knew it's going to
give me a hard time. A very hard time. And that me and my members is going to
do more jobs than the other bureaus. Of all the insisting, I couldn't say
much anymore and took the job.The actual date for out main event was 29th of
April. A month before the date, I've already discussed with the caterer about
food that we want to order from them. A total of 150 packets of food. The true
hardship of this program hit when suddenly it was requested to prepare only sandwiches
to accommodate a significant change in participants number. Plaque of
appreciation were requested. And one of the prize for the lucky drawy suggested
was trolley school bag, which in very pricey and hard to find nowadays. I guess
kids don't prefer to bring them to school anymore. Or maybe kids nowadays are
more mature than years before. Who knows. Whatever it was, I enjoyed the
journey of buying the stuff, even though there were so many difficulties coming
along our way. First, contacting Gardenia company to order their cream bread
and white bread was no easy. They keep on passing the phone to somebody else
and this has made things complicated and dragged the time. When I got to the
person in charge, apparently, she said that an order should be at the minimum
of 300 packets, which means we couldn't order them since we only wanted to
order for 250 packets. So I notified my members and assigned few of them to buy
the bread at NSK because unfortunately Giant and Aeon doesn't have that much of
bread. Me and my another members went to Giant to buy the stuff to be included
in hampers and ingredients to prepare the sandwiches. Even though there were so
many things we need to buy, it took no longer than an hour to gather our
stuf because I've already divided them to buy certain things. The thing
about me when it comes at the paying counter and when I buy stuff in a huge
quantity is that I always feel like doing one of the episode of Extreme
Couponing. But this time, it's No-Coupon edition. No pun intended. The next
day, it was Friday. I went out to buy a few more things like the basket for the
hampers and trolley school bag and cellophane tape. The hardest things to find
were the wrapper for hampers and trolley school bag. I was informed that Mr DIY
have them. But when I called a few nearest outlets, they said that the two
items were out of stock. Okay,I I guess the whole nation buy trolley school bag
and wrapper on the same week then. Lucky me, I found this little shop in Mid
Valley that sells school bags and school uniform. The price was a bit expensive
than the ones at Mr DIY, but who has the choice to demand for a cheaper one
when to find one has been the major problem here.
On the day of event, our major problem was the sudden excess of food since
there were clashes with another two parties. Everyone said that it's better to
have excess food than not enough food. I agreed. Fortunately, the villagers
managed to finish them all. Two words to describe the community ; unbelievably
amazing. A lot of difficulties came along the event but we managed them all and
give our best to make it a success. It was a tiring yet satisfying day.
After the event, we were so happy for such accomplishment. It always feels
good to do good deeds. I learnt a lot of new things. I experienced them. After
all, it was a good idea to start taking this course to a whole new level.
