At first when we were being
introduced to this course by our course instructor, Dr . Puah Suat Moi during
our first semester, it first came to my mind that “Oh well, this is going to be
a course which we just have to volunteer ourselves and everything will be easy.
No exams. No quizzes. ” . I didn’t think
much about the reason and the meaning behind this course. What I could think of
is just merely what I have to do in order to get a good pointer of it.
And it all started with the first lesson
we had. Our long term project was planned to carry out in a village of Orang Asli which aimed to give exposure
to the children of the indigenous community about the importance of education
and scientific knowledge. After much effort from the Bureau of External
Relation and Dr. Puah, we were able to get the permission from Jabatan Kemajuan Orang Asli (JAKOA) to
carry out our project at Kampung Desa Temuan, Bukit Lanjan.
I was appointed to become the leader for
Bureau Fundings and it was the first time for me to take up this great
responsibility. Everything is a new challenge for me. Everything starts from
zero. We started off finding sponsorship by sending emails to companies and designing
T-shirt. We also did a carwash event on 6th April. We wrote a letter
to the Deputy Dean of Faculty of Medicine, to ask for permission to hold our
event at the car park of Faculty of Medicine. At first, I was worried because there
were also students from Medicine had a car wash event one week before ours .
However, it surprised me when many of them were willing to help us and some of
them even paid us RM100 for a car . Thanks to those kind-hearted people , I
felt that there is still warmth in our society. I would also like to have
special thanks to our coursemates whom were willing to get out from their bed
early in the morning , and washed the cars with sweats all over their head
without any complaint.
Because of the hard work from everyone,
we were able to gain a profit of RM 868 . I learned that together , we can make
a difference .Some of our classmates also went to Kampung Desa Temuan , Bukit
Lanjan on 25th of March to set up a booth and helped to promote our
event on 29th April 2018 . This was an important platform to promote
our event to the community in the village. Finally, our event was just around
the corner and on 27th April which was two days before our event, we
had a test run conducted by the Bureau Activity. On that night, we were divided
into groups and we went to different stations in our residential college to
test the games prepared by the members of Bureau Activity. For me, the games
were so much fun and we had a bonding time among our classmates. We packed the
hampers together and we believed that those kids would be delighted when they
received the hampers. By imagining the happy face of the kids, it also cracks a
smile on my face. I think that is what meant by giving is a blessing and its
better than receiving.
On 28th April, the high
committee went to meet the person in charge of the kampung , Encik Norazman to
discuss further about the details of event . Finally, it came to the day which
we awaited for so long. I was thrilled and I can’t wait to meet those children.
We departed on 7.45 am by taking bus. On that day, I was the facilitator for the
children and we had to take care of the children. At first, I was a bit worried
as I am not that kind of person whom can really take good care of children.
However, I took my first step ahead and I could say that it was fun dealing
with children. But at the same time, to be honest, I was also feeling exhausted.
It was their smile on their face which encourage me to continue on my job and I
told myself that I should appreciate and enjoy every moment with the kids since
that it may be the first but also last time for me to meet them . I could say
that maybe in future I would forget the names of these children, but the sweet
memories and the happy smiles that they always put on their face will never
fade away in my memory.
Fun explore race, exciting
science experiments, hand wash session, thrilling music chairs were held. Finally
it has come to the hardest part of these event, which is to say goodbye to them
and hope everything the best for them. Pictures were taken with the children,
our instructor and all lecturers whom came on that day. Everything end with
pictures and sweet memories within our heart. I learned that sharing happiness
is double happiness and sharing sorrow is half sorrow. I felt so happy when the
kids were happy; I also felt that I am not alone when we faced problem. I would
also like to take this opportunity to thanks to each of the High Committee of
this project because nothing can be done without them , like a puzzle without a
single piece is not completed. I learned from them on how to handle a situation
and we communicate among us to work things out. We should live our life to the
fullest and enjoy every single moment. This course taught me something that I
can’t learn from lectures, which is to commit to our society. The purpose of
life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be
compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived
well. Remember, together, we can make the world a better place to live in.
