“ It is more
blessed to give than to receive. ” it is easy to say but hardly to carry out.
However, i was grateful that i was able to contribute to the society through
project of GIG1005 Social Engagement Course.
Before ending of
semester one, our course instructor, Dr Puah had a meeting with us to discuss
about the project that we were going to carry on semester two. We came to a
decision which was having a charity project in indigenous village in order to
give a long term impact to the society. High committee had been selected on
that day and i involved myself as a member in bureau activities. It was my
first time and i was quite interest in planning activities. Hoping that i can
had a new experience as well.
Of course, there
were be challenges waiting for us during our planning. However, we faced with
open-minded and converted all these challenges into motivation. Our high
committee really did a good job and we managed to confirm our destination which
was at Taman Desa Temuan Bukit Lanjan. We faced with some problems once we
noticed that our project clashed with activities carried by student of Faculty
of Law every Sunday. After discussion, they decided to collaborate with us and
we played a role of main conductor. I felt thankful to my team leader, Choo Li
Yuan who took her responsibilities very well. She had initiated group meeting, Whatapps discussion and distribution of tasks. Under her guidance, we managed
to plan the tentative of our project and decide the activities such as Zumba
session, Explorace, experiment, sharing session and so on. Test run and
practices had been carried out to prevent ant mistakes on actual day.
Finally, we came
to our big day which was on 29 April 2018 ( Sunday ). It took around 40 minutes
for us to reach our destination. Upon reached there, we saw some children
playing around. We quickly loaded down hampers and other materials. After that,
every bureau took their parts without further delayed. Before starting our
parts, my team leader gathered us once again, gave a briefing to ensure
everything run smoothly. Our activities started with zumba session leading by
student of Faculty of Law. I involved myself in the Zumba session as well. I
noticed that most of the children able to follow the steps and they looked
cheerful. Zumba session only took around 20 minutes. After that, we immediately
started with registration and distribution them into group. We found out that
only 50 children presented out of 150 children. However, it was quite
convenience for us to follow our initial grouping plan, which each group around
8 people. As a facilitator, i was in charge of Group 8 and guided 6 children.
Firstly, I asked their name and remembered them, hoping that i managed to
recognized them once they moved around. It was shock to me when hearing them
called me “Cikgu” instead of sister. At that moment, i felt that i should take
my responsibility like a “Cikgu” and do my best in guidance. After distribution
into group, they had a light breakfast. Explorace started immediately after
taking breakfast. When led them moving from one station to another, i run at
the front as motivation but often turned ahead to ensure everyone not falling
behind. We started with floating game, “bola beracun”, hide -and-find and
lastly miracle puzzles. Throughout the games, i found out all of them enjoyed
themselves especially playing with ball. One of them was clever enough to
notice the hint behind the puzzles and able to complete the puzzles in short
time. There was no big problems during Explorace as they can follow
instruction. The problems i faced were i did not know the ways they think and
they were not good in control their emotion. Some of them refused to join in
certain game without reason and some of them can be friendly to each other at
this moment but not for next moment. Anyway, i tried to approach them and
pursued them with nice tone. Fortunately, they willing to hear to me. Explorace
was then continued with lunch. During lunch hour, there was an incident
occurred but fortunately Dr Puah and our high committee able to take immediate
action to settle that incident. I was not at the spot at that time and i heard
from my friend about the incident. I felt guilty as i was not guide them as one
of the children was from my group. I took this incident as lesson and i
promised to myself that i will guide children from beginning until ending once
i be a facilitator next time. After lunch time, we started with cigarette
experiment and a short drama. I was in charge of giving explanation about the
drama. This drama aimed to increase their awareness about washing hand properly
after using toilet. I was happy as able to get response from children and they
were willing and excited to learn new thing. My parts as a member of bureau
activities ended after the drama. Although i had no time to take lunch and felt
tired, all of the hard work were worthy sawing children indulging in happiness.
I felt
appreciated that i had this chance to join in such a meaningful charity
project. I always believe that “Education is the most powerful weapon in the
world” in which education plays a very important role to improve social
quality. Children should be exposed to education instead of full filling their
material needs. Indigenous group are also able to improve their quality of life
by themselves in future. Hoping that our junior can continue our journey in
helping indigenous group and achieve our objectives of this charity project.
